I started writing a long involved update about my recent holiday to Singapore and Malaysia. Just needed to add a pic so I saved it as private...
...and ignored it for a month. I'll finish up that post this week, unless it turns out to be really boring. If it is, I'll spare you and just delete it.
In the interests of finishing what I start, here's a short post.
I went to Malaysia. I took a cool photo. Here it is.

I just bought WinXP Media Centre Edition. I feel all ethical and stuff. |

Really. I didn't. I like computers and okay, I studied computer science and I work in IT (healthcare) but that's as far as it goes. So I thought. Yet somehow in the past 18 months I've manage to acquire: (in no particular order)
A SonyEricsson Cybershot phonecam (The k800i, best phonecam I could get for free from my mobile provider) A blog that gets thousands of visitors a month (note to self, stop faffing on the Internet and write some damn posts) A DS (blue)... ...Which I traded in for a DS Lite (black) Another DS Lite (white) that I won in a competition and gave to my boyfriend A PS2 (hand-me-down) A VGA box to plug said PS2 into my PC monitor A PDA (acquired free from work) A wi-fi router. Another wireless router that actually works. A Nikon D40 (Squee!) And what feels like a million social networking profiles.
I think I have to admit it. I am a tech-head. Not just a gamer at all.
Dammit. *geeks off into the corner*Current Mood: geeky

Dexter = best new show ever. Finally, a new tv series that doesn't revolve around characters being dumb as shit. Also, Michael C Hall is looking well :) Buy it, record it, download it, whatever it takes.
In other news, I ate a raw carrot today. I felt kinda ill after. My gut is unused to that level of healthy fibre.Current Mood: sick

For Christmas my sis gave me enough money that I can afford a black Nikon D40 :) A 6 megapixel SLR, so a bit of a step up from my Nikon Coolpix 3500. :)
Will post pictures on my flickr account as soon as I find some disk space on my PC.
In other news, I had a plan to eat non-potato vegetables at least once a week and going to the gym twice a week. Does a cheese and onion pasty count as vegetables?

Fricken AWESOME game so far. It's a space RPG sorta thing. Pick up missions, trade, escort, hunt pirates, smuggle, etc. Kinda like Wing Commander Privateer only I never really got into that for some reason. I have overwhelming memories of Privateer being very yellow and a bit dull.
I'm beginning to wonder if they have some sort of cunning dial-down-the-difficulty thing going on with the space dogfights. I'm like... not dying all that often. It's a good thing, but I know my own space-combat abilities better than that.

My games blog is ickle, so doesn't qualify for things like BlogAds.
I've been running an ad for Performancing Partners all month in an effort to get advertisers without having to worry about all the hassle of raising invoices and negotiating contracts. So far I've had exactly no takers and my AdSense revenue has halved :( They use an auto-pricing feature but I'm being seriously undercut by the guy next to me in the Games category. Sucks, man. I wrote a post complaining about the system in the forums. I hope they'll take heed. If not, I'll just take their code down and go back to AdSense. It's a pity coz I want to support them but they're just not useful enough to be worth it right now.
Never mind. My day job at the hospital got re-graded so I'm 2 grades higher than I used to be :) No word on whether or not I'll get paid more but it means I definitely get a small raise in March instead of being stuck on the same pay while inflation goes up around me.
Also, for anyone who doesn't read my games blog, my pic got into a press release for a Guitar Hero 2 promo event. Heehee! I'm the one in the last photo wearing a bandanna.
(Sorry to people who do read The Average Gamer. I already said it twice there this morning ;) )

Fiiiiinally got around to sorting out the layout of my gaming website today. I think it looks pretty damn slick now :) Still need a decent logo, though.
Also playing Sid Meier's RailRoads! Love it at the moment. It's everything that I hoped Railroad Tycoon 2 would be. Also the cows go "Moooooooo" when they're climbing onto the trains. So cute!
English winter sucks. The summer was so long that I'd forgotten how much I hate shitty cold weather.
And my old email friend from Australia is coming over to England in January. Yay! :) Unless he's turned into a serial killer or something. Only met him once, seven years ago so I think I'll leave it a while before telling him where I live.

I'm looking for some appointments/task list management software for both my desktop and PDA that will sync between the two and ISN'T Outlook.
And doesn't cost $70 either. I've seen a few but they're usually $25 for PC version. $45 for sync functionality (!!)

In data collection people constantly ask for information that would be nice to have but they have no plans to use. It's amazing how people demand stuff they don't really want. I found this lovely gem related to software development in the comments from 43folders:
"A scenario from RonJeffries explains the practices: You're working on some class. You have just added some functionality that you need. You realize that you are going to need some other bit of functionality. If you don't need it now, don't add it now. Why not? -
- "OK, Sam, why do you want to add it now?"
-
- "Well, Ron, it will save time later."
But unless your universe is very different from mine, you can't 'save' time by doing the work now, unless it will take more time to do it later than it will to do now. So you are saying: -
- "We will be able to do less work overall, at the cost of doing more work now."
But unless your project is very different from mine, you already have too much to do right now. Doing more now is a very bad thing when you already have too much to do. And unless your mind is very different from mine, there is a high chance that you won't need it after all, or that you'll need to rewrite or fix it once you do need it. If either of these happens, not only will you waste time overall, you will prevent yourself from adding things that you do need right now. -
- "But Ron, I know how to do it right now, and later I might not."
-
- "So, Sam, you're telling me that this class you're writing is so complex that even you won't be able to maintain it?"
Keep it simple. If you need it, you can put it in later. If you don't need it, you won't have to do the work at all. Take that day off."
- You aren't gonna need it. Ugly page, good advice.

So, the poetry-posting thing was a failed attempt to get myself to look into strict poetry forms more often. Turns out I'm just not that motivated so I'm back to prose.
Found the most banal line in a news story that I've ever seen today. From the BBC News article about some plane that flew into a New York building we have...
"Witnesses told the Associated Press news agency the crash caused a loud noise, and burning and falling debris was seen."
A loud noise? From a plane->building collision? Surely you jest...
I'm in a good mood coz I snaffled an unused Pocket PC from work :) Good moods make me very sarcastic.
Off to bed. Will try to update more often.

I know, I never update my journal. My life is boring, okay? I get bored at work, drink cheap wine, play games, and... yeah, that's it.
I've also been making movies! :) Using The Movies, that is. I make B-grade sci-fi movies. Very cheesy but hey, I'm easily amused. At least I don't inflict lame dialogue on people. Not yet, anyway.

Post comments here, or rate them on the site if you have a Lionhead account. Yeah, the video quality is rubbish. That's the limitation of the game's website :(

Busy weekend...
Great British Beer Festival = good. Didn't accidentally buy any beers that come with lumps floating in the bottom and found some lovely IPAs. Pity most of the stalls ran out of beer around 3pm. :( Sharps Brewery beers are very nice though I didn't get to try their award-winning DoomBar, due to getting too squiffy on all their other beers.
Dead Rising 360 demo = Awesome! Especially for the bowling balls, shopping trolley and giant Lego heads. And the fact that I got 427 points for a photo.
Off to Brick Lane for a Tiger Beer Chili Crab festival tomorrow. I hate crab but hopefully there will be some other nice Singaporean food there.
Speaking of Tiger Beer, what is the freaking point of websites that ask you to enter your DOB before entering?? 13 year olds can't subtract 18 or 21 from the current year any more? At least Tiger Beer give you a horoscope reading but it's still kinda weird.
Off to try and pry my bf away from Prey so I can hit more zombies with golf balls ;)

According to the Political Compass, I am the following.

That seems to put me just between Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama.
